I decided to throw caution to the wind on this one (I bought this device 3 days ago and would be real sorry to see it brick'd) and used a firmware mod from here :
http://wiki.wdlxtv.com/Main_Page
So far, results have been mixed but largely good. The flash was very simple to do - just add the stuff to a pen drive, reboot, and bam! The homebrew firmware actually boots quicker than WD stock firmware.
In some ways it works much better than the NSLU2 (notably, performance and some out of the box functionality - like some handy pre-installed apps in the gigantic memory space on this device), in other ways - not as well : had a little trouble with adding users and havent gotten around to the way the read only file systems on this device have been laid out and how to customize the osd mods to something I like more. I'm also a little afraid of bricking it given there doesnt seem to be the same level of public activity around this device yet unlike the NSLU2
To make sure there was a way out of this, I also managed to reflash the original firmware and it all works fine like before.
Will let you guys know if I manage to play with it some more.

I own a WDTV and would be interested in using it as a Slug-like box.
Thanks for sharing, Harsh!
