answer. I used to be all um... retentive about the whole thing, until I
found that there is no consensus anywhere about it.
If a thread is consistently bottom-posted, I will follow suit.
Otherwise, it's easier to take the default and top post. For the reader,
it's more convenient if you don't have to page down to the bottom of the
message to read the newest addition.
Besides, the email list software tends to put lots of junk at the bottom
of the message, then strip it off when it's sent back. If you post under
the footer, your message will probably disappear (I haven't tested it.)
If it doesn't, it'll still be less likely to be read.
If you put your reply below the old text, but above the footer, you're
burying it -- especially if your email client ends up indenting it with
the old message.
