Memory is always good. With Mint some of the desktops can be resources

As Justin says, usually not an issue till space is low.

You young 'uns learn differently. When I see someone has made a youtube
video, I get annoyed and go to the next result--why make me sit through 5
minutes of what I could read in 1.

Deleting the cookies may not make that big a difference--adblock is useful,
and it's unfortunate--many sites do rely on ads to support them, but there
are so many put in that are the equivalent of spam, that suck up bandwidth
for those with bandwidth limits, that blare out sound and pictures, that
serve malware, that it's become a necessity.
I think that trying the XFCE version (which, as far as I can tell, is
usually quicker to come out than LXDE versions--someone who knows might be
able to give better answers) would probably fix a lot of the slowness.
