I'm aware of all that--but the OP is apparently not wanting to run a server. If I were in fact setting up a server, I too would dispense with a GUI on it.
However, I do tend to focus on the original question, not answering other needs that have not been asked.
Running a VM can indeed be worthwhile; however, that isn't simply to extend one's understanding of CLI issues--which, again, IIRC was the original request.
