Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 Dislike

I do not hate Mint or Debian. It is Mint users that are giving it a bad
name, just as is the case with Debian. If I was part of the Mint community
then I would resent that. If the only advice that people can offer is to
switch distros then that is not helpful. My point is that he has already
installed Ubuntu and needs help. You do not address the fact that Mint is
Ubuntu with a few frills, most of which are in the Ubuntu repositories. So
unless you want the theme and a few extras like Mint Menu, Software Centre
and Nanny then it is pointless to suggest its installation for hardware
issues. Check the Mint repository and you will find little else but the
extra applications and themes. There are codecs, but Ubuntu has them too.
That is why I do not think that installing Mint will help. Underneath it is
the same. The reason why some things seem to work better in Mint is that
proprietary is enabled by default. This can be done in Ubuntu, but it needs
to be done post installation which is less work than re-installation. You
take this as a slap at Mint, but it is a slap at the advice which is lame
and is based on a false premise that Mint is superior in this respect. Any
hardware that will work with Mint will work in Ubuntu. You do not appear to
get that so you give the same advice for every hardware problem. Did you
check the Mint forums? They have hardware issues just like people do with
other distros.

As for not reading the original message, I do not get it Gmail and I answer
hundreds of help requests on several forums. Keeping them straight is a
challenge. The difference is that I give advice on distros that I do not use
and do not suggest they switch distros to my distro of choice and give
advice for the problem at hand I do not cruise forums and advertise for any
distro and sound like a broken record.

Mint is a replacement for Ubuntu for people who do not care about licensing
and want convenience. It is not better. It is just an alternative. As long
as people misrepresent it then they are doing neither Mint nor users a
favour. Trying to keep the record straight does not make me opposed to Mint
but opposed to misinformation and those who spread it. Trying to build a
distro by hitting on the users of another distro is bad for Linux. It has
not worked in the past and it won't work now. Mint will get a bad name and
it will be its users who will be to blame.

BTW, I do not use Ubuntu. I defend it because it is worth defending. It is
being original and showing leadership. It used to live off Debian, but now
that is no longer the case. It is based on Debian, but it is the driving
force in Debian based distros. I hope that Mint will make a similar
contribution in the future. I wish them well, but lets do it honestly.

When Mint users desist from spreading the idea that Mint is better than
Ubuntu then I will stop correcting them.
