[LINUX_Newbies] Is there a way to repair Linux Mint?

 

My Wifi tinkering failed. A Wifi dongle will solve the problem, but meanwhile
suspend and hibernate just blink and nothing happens. It would be easier to repair than to reinstall.
Is there a way to do that?

    I have no problem with www.linux.com, but I generally prefer to get flavors of Linux as close to the source as possible. Mind you, Linux Mint was hacked for about 5 minutes a couple of years back; they made the mistake of using Wordpress (motto: "We don't just have back doors; we ARE a back door!"). But note that the hack was found because the distro didn't match the checksum.

Thanks, it's a good idea. I did verify the ISO DVD. This Wifi problem, from a number of posts online, seems a recurring issue with Broadcom Wifi cards of the 2009-2012 or so era. Not all of them, just the ones like I have.  Many solutions are offered, some of them work when the problem is recurring password authentication, but mine is never connected in the first place. Is it an ISP problem, a software mismatch ... who knows.

I"m only running Linux Mint Cinnamon 18.1. The Vista ran fine to the very end of the hard drive, just a few weeks ago, and now is gone forever. Linux with cable runs well. Will not connect to the internet.

Something is wrong if you're getting prompted for a password.  The image boots and you should be taken straight into a desktop environment with a couple desktop icons, one of which says something like "Install Ubuntu".  But if you're being taken to a login screen, you have a bad image, perhaps, or something else happened.

Where did you get the image, and what image is it exactly (which version of Ubuntu are you using)?

How did you create the bootable USB stick?  Perhaps something broke in that process causing the issue?

suggest though that a username you might try is root. There might not
be a password yet. There also might be. If so the password is probably
the same as the username. This can be changed later if you choose to
install.

I used Mint XFCE in the past, so Linux can use various file managers. In most, I just right-clicked on the name if I recall. If memory serves most Linux auto-defrags at night. I think some of the Linux reviews might help, or haunt the Mint website groups, or search on the Web, too.

When I first started using Linux, I asked a very similar question. I
was told that Linux does not have a defrag-type command, because it
stores data in a non-fragmented state, hence defrag is simply not
necessary. For the other thing, renaming a partition is easy. I use
cfdisk, but I'm lazy. I suppose one could do it with fdisk...
