Telling us what application and possibly even what distribution you are using could be useful in giving you some options as to what you can do. What desktop X Window manager you use couldn't hurt either. As all Linux really is is a couple files sitting in /boot and the rest varies considerably from installation to installation.

Depending on circumstances telling us how you installed this application may even matter too so tossing that in cannot hurt.

Nothing starts out complicated, it just gets that way.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: W8 & Linux

MS isn't going to do too much of any thing with Win8. There is many
companies out there just waiting for it to
come out, so they can sue MS. To tell me that in order to sell software for
Win8, I have to pay them(MS) 30%,
I don't think so. Last year(2010) I sold over $100,000.00 of software,
by twenty developers, for the Win OS. If I
have to pay them(MS) 30%, I would louse money. With cost of copying,
shipping and more I only make little
over 15% for myself with, about 28%, going to the developers. My company is
small but with that fee, it would put
me out of business. I work with developers just starting out that does
shareware and with some that does it for an hobby.

Not all Linux applications install a link in the Desktop Menu.

Open a CLI console and type the which command then a space, then the
name of the application you installed. It should return the path for the
application.

[LINUX_Newbies] Re: Looking for Media player for Ubuntu 11.04

I know exactly what you are showing. I use it myself. It is the graphic equalizer - several bands across - that go from bass to mid tome to high and you slide the bars over each to what is preferred.

For instance, for music I use about midway for the bass tones and mid tones a tad under and high treble tones up high which adds clarity. Too much bass and mid tones can cause distortion.

The graphic equalizer controls the sound to exact listening pleasure.

I have seen you mentioned you have a 64 bit computer. I did not know that until now. 64 bit software is just a tad harder to find has been my experience.

Two places I know of are SourceForge.Net
http://sourceforge.net/
and ....
http://linuxappfinder.com/

Of course third party software cautions are observed outside the Linux Software Repository is always a mention from Debian.

[LINUX_Newbies] Linux Location of Menu entries

Dear All

I have installed an application in Linux. The installation was completed without generating any errors.
However, the entry in the start menu is not active.
This entry needs to be editted to make the entry active.
Can someone tell me where in the Linux file system a "Desktop menu" entry is located?

Thank you for your help

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: W8 & Linux

Miguel de Icaza recently said that there are only 10 good Linux
applications. I am sure most of were Mono or GTK, although he did not name
any.
He also extolled the virtues of W8. Sometimes I wonder whose side he is on.
He says MS will sell a lot of W8 computers. I am not sure that I agree. The
desktop market is collapsing and business will want W7 over W8. A lot of
traditional desktop users will. To sell lots they will have to make serious
in roads on mobile devices and Android and iOS have a serious lead.

Hi,

Would someone nice person with a nslu2 toolchain please compile the 2.4 version of bzfs, the BZFlag server, the current 2.0.12 version in the repository is not compatible with the new 2.4 BZFlag client. Unslung or SlugOS5.3, either would be OK for me (I've both :-))

Please.

Since I'm not sure whether this group accepts attachments, I have put the screen shot of what I'm looking for in a player for Linux on my ComputingForSeniors group home page. It is Windows Media Player 11 as it appears on my display on my Vista system.

Normally it is not 'good' to put the URL of another group on a group but I want all of you who are interested to see exactly what I'm seeking.

Comments and suggestions are welcome of course.

"Mahalo" Roy for your suggestion(s). I will do that after I get my machine back from the techie downtown who is doing the job of downgrading the mail program and Windows Media Player from 12 to 11 on my new WIN7 system. I will want to migrate away from Windows over the next year if possible and have a player in Ubuntu that will give me what WMP11 does. I don't have to worry about the POP email problem as I find that Evolution is just fine! It is the equivalent of Windows Mail in Vista.

Using Ubuntu 11, 64 bit

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Looking for Media player for Ubuntu 11.04

It is easy to install as many as you like and then remove any that you do
not like. All are free to use. Installation is a breeze in Software Centre,
Muon (Kubuntu) or Synaptic. That way you get first hand experience with
each. I am a VLC, Amarok, Clementine (a fork of old Amarok) and Audacity
fan. Each is different and all work well. I do not use an equaliser, but
know that Audacity is great for this, but it is not a player in the
traditional sense. Exaile is a GTK attempt to emulate Amarok of old. It is
quite powerful, but not my player of choice. It think that it has an
equaliser. Most do. You may have to check a menu item or add a plugin in the
settings to enable it. VLC is like that.
