Please accept my apology in advance if this has been answered already.  This is my first time posting to this group.  I have read the FAQ's, and perused the Linux Installation How To, but still have questions.

I have a Dell Latitude Rugged with a 500 GB SSD, 16G Ram, and Win 7.  I cannot risk partitioning, because this laptop is my bread and butter as a self-employed PLC programmer.  So I purchased a second 500 GB SSD drive to start learning and using Linux on.  The SSD drives are quickly replaceable by simply pulling out, and re-plugging the new one in, making the change simple and fast.

My problem is that almost all documentation I read is directed to partitioning drives to run Linux.  I want to simply install Linux on a new clean SSD drive in order to keep Windows and Linux completely separate.  My PLC programming software will only run on Windows.  Would somebody direct me to information that will teach me to safely install Linux on the second replaceable internal SSD drive I have purchased?

I wish to learn Linux using Ubuntu at first maybe, and progress to Kali afterwards, so that I can begin providing security support to manufacturing facilities that may be vulnerable to hacking of their PLC control systems.

Thanks in advance to anybody that will assist.

I just used Rufus to create a bootable USB referencing the latest Ubuntu. Downloaded .ISO

After using the USB to test the hardware, I simply rebooted the USB and selected "install" with the desired partly windows formatted 1 partition primary then format [10%] 2T-HD.

I would presume that the SSD would function in the same way.

I am a member of a homesteading group on groups.io.com.  Recently the
owner and some members of her team have been going through every message
in the archives and adding tags so that stuff is easier to find.  For
example, let's say that you wanted to search for a recipe.  Those are
under #Recipes.  AFAIK though, this is done on a per-group basis.  It is
not a service performed by groups.io.  I've heard that some of the
high-ups at groups.io USED to work for Yahoo Groups, but this is hearsay
at this point.
