In that order.
Yes, you can get online without dialup using Linux. It works the same
way as it would in Windows. HOWEVER, there's no such thing as free
internet, unless you're using a wireless card of some sort and sitting
in a location that has free wi-fi, or you're leeching off a neighbors
wireless access point.
Otherwise, you'll have to buy your own internet connection, whether
it's broadband (somewhat cheap to very expensive) or dial-up (can be
as cheap as 5.00 a month).
In either case, the main point of your question, free internet access
is the biggest problem. As I said, the only way to really get "free"
internet is to use someone else's. You can't just turn on a computer
and pull the internet out of the sky. Well, you can, but SOMEONE,
somewhere is paying for it, be that your neighbor, or a coffee shop or
school, or what have you.
So that's a fairly generic answer, and I'm sorry for that, but there's
not enough detail in your original post to really go beyond that
without writing a book on the basics of internet connectivity.
The real questions would be, what kind of network devices do you have
in the machine? (Wireless? Wired? Modem?)
What do you actually want to accomplish? If it's just getting a
network/internet connection, that's fairly easy. If it's getting free
internet, well, you're on your own there, bubba.
What's your experience level with regard to Linux, or any non-Windows OS?
What kind of hardware is in the PC you're talking about? Will it even
be compatible?
Anyway, again, sorry for the generic answer, but that was sort of a
generic question.
