Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Sound dying in Koala, 9.10

I've forgotten or you did not say, is it Ubuntu or Kubuntu? You might want
to install the other environment and see if it occurs there as well. If not,
then it is a problem with GNOME or KDE or Canonical's implementation of it
as the case may be. You can then consider using the environment that works
or re-installing the one that does not work from the one that does. This is
not the same as starting over. It is done from Synaptic.

I have GNOME, KDE4, LXDE, XFCE, Fluxbox, Openbox, Sugar, and Enlightenment
installed. I switch between them at login when I click on the Session
button. It is fun to use different desktops and it is useful to troubleshoot
problems. You just use the one that works and fix the one that doesn't. Who
knows? Maybe you will even grow to like the one that you didn't use before.

To add KDE, go to the Metapackages section of Synaptic and add
kubuntu-desktop. To add GNOME, go to the Metapackages section and add
ubuntu-desktop. For XFCE add xubuntu-desktop. The others are found under the
miscellaneous graphical sections. You don't need to re-boot. Just log out.
Switch sessions and log back in. If for some strange reason it isn't working
use right-Alt+Sys-req+K to kill it and change your session back to what you
used before. This is rare, but I throw it out there, just in case.

The alternative to this is to work with what you have and try to figure it
out which can take time. Patience is the key.

Remember that Linux offers choice and it is your friend. If something does
not work, try something else. You can even move to anther distro if all else
fails.
