Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Request - Laptop selection

Hi Jeff,

My need is "Linux OS" n development on it for application, cloud, embedded systems, large size code building (e.g. Kernel, toolchain, drivers, multiple files using make).

Windows I need to install for my wife (web. Surf) n my son (educational softwares).

I have tried Dell site n customized my requirement (4gB ram, 1Tb hdd, type - power, I7 intel processor, etc) -- I found Inspiron 15R as a suggested laptop.

My brother use DELl ULTRABOOK XPS14 @ hongkong n he found best device.

1. In future I may try to port ANDROID on my selected laptop. Also, my max requirement is porting n embedded systems development.

2. What u suggest on processor arch?
These laptops are 64-bit. I hope linux has best support on 64-bit as far as apps n tools are concerned. I shud not miss any installlation just due to not having 32-bit arch laptop.

3. If I think different, go for MAC book
Its expensive, no doubt but I may need to find economic one, if any
But I also don't want to compromise on linux support on MAC.
I shud not find myself stuck with MAC os then I won't be able to use Linux os.

I appreciating all your valuable inputs. It helps me a lot.

Regards,
Naresh BHALALA

End user level machines. Go with XPS if you intend to use this for
work. Alienware may be a good alternative too (I do my daily work on
an Alienware M15x) Inspirons... meh... they're decent, IMO, but as far
as business use goes, are more geared toward people who do more
presentations and spreadsheets than people who do coding, compiling,
and more intense work. You MAY be happy with the higher end
Inspirons, but honestly, to me they feel cheaply made.

Crap. I haven't seen a decent Thinkpad since the X220. I currently
own an X201. All the newer are generally Crap, and stay away
especially from the Edge series... pure garbage. Thinkpads are NOT
the same as they were in the IBM days. IBM and the EARLY Lenovo
thinkpads were bullet proof, which is why I STILL use my old X201.
It's rock solid. But I've tested Linux (Ubuntu) on multiple new
thinkpads, and I wouldn't waste my own money on any of them these
days.

> 3. HP
The only good HPs I've liked are the extreme high end. Again, they
feel cheaply made. I only own one HP laptop, and really don't like
it. I let my wife have it for her web-surfing machine because it felt
like I would break it from normal use and the case was creaky and felt
flimsy.

> 4 Toshiba
Toshiba actually makes decent machines. I can't tell you much about
Linux support on them, but I do know that some older models at least
work very well. The newer ones, maybe, maybe not. Of the four
you listed, I'd look at either a dell XPS laptop (beefy like
Alienware, but not as expensive) or a Toshiba before the others.

That being said, I'm currently looking at a Dell XPS13 Ultrabook that
seems pretty suitable for a development system. I'm also looking at a
Macbook, however. I don't need windows, I just need to run Linux (and
I would like to get an OSX machine of my very own.
