Interesing, as Mint is one of the ones I recommend to newcomers. I'd be
surprised if the KDE bits were the trouble though, as I've often done that
sort of thing on various versions of Linux without problems.

Depending upon what programs one uses, staying with an older version can be
the Smart Thing To Do(TM). A lot of changes in Linux these days aren't,
in my old person's opinion, for the better.
