I never tried Cinnamon I don't think.Anyhow I have done Wi-Fi in Linux and it can be a bit of a pain, even when the hardware is supported. Broadcom has a bit of a reputation of being especially hard to get to work, I've never had the pleasure of that experience either. But I've certainly seen enough people asking for help to get Broadcom to work in order to realize there must be a serious issue there.

You are going to have to determine whether you have a 32, or 64 bit version of Mint installed. Maybe you just know? If not see if your Mint 16 has the lsb_release command. If that does not work then perhaps you can tell with this command, uname -a. If you see the letters pae then you have 32 bits, if not maybe 64. Although you can run 32 bits without pae too. If you see x86_64 or something then you have 64 bits, i686 is 32. uname -m might work so it is worth trying.
Once you have figured out if you have 32, or 64 bit download the right driver and see if you can install it. I am reading the README.txt they have and you're going to have to build it against a kernel source tree it looks like. That can be a difficult task for new users. Follow the Ubuntu directions to set that up, and cross your fingers.
