The init sequence stuff is something I have not studied as yet. It was my understanding, though, that both the BSD init and the sysv init was being replaced (or already has been replaced) in a number of distros by Upstart.
From my admittedly limited understanding, isn't an event-driven method somewhat cleaner than a batch-oriented process?
