It's amazing how much of what you say in this post was not correct, for
me, until just a few months ago. :)
Starting in Linux as I did, with Red Hat 7 and Slackware back in 2000, I
had to learn how to do things like compile from source code, tweak
makefiles, etc.
Even as recently as Open Office 2, on RHEL3, I was still tracking down
dependencies on my own.
I did not discover yum until a few months ago, when I upgraded to CentOS
5.4.

I still install small apps w/o a lot of dependencies into my local
/home/wittig/
libraries, so it is a nice, local place to put things.
Linux has come a looong way, since 2000.
