Hi Loyal. I had the AA1 with the 8GB hard drive. My response to another
email that Sharon accidentally sent me rather than the list should show
up soon, which explains it, but in a nutshell.
The 8 GB SSD that came with the early Aspires had an incredibly low
write speed--read speed was fine, but write was something like 1MB/s or
so.
This meant that if, for example, you installed Ubuntu, and then went to
update, it would literally take hours. (Assuming that you were updating
a relatively established version--might have been Jaunty at the time.)
I remember installing shortly before a new version came out, where there
were about 300 updates, and it literally took 6 hours.
So, it would make a difference in what we might suggest to
the OP.
Just saying, install Ubuntu, for example, might not be good advice
in this case.
(Also, if it's the 8 GB hard drive, saying install the full version of
any of the desktop distros, which take up 3 gigs or so, isn't
necessarily the best advice.)
However, even more than space, the write speed was the issue for many
people.

any better than this?
Giles: Because it has to be.
