I was reading Joan's message and that exact thought occurred to me.
I've never tried to change a PW by chrooting into the install, but did
wonder if that would work (and I can really see no reason why it
shouldn't work, unless there's some interaction between the hashing
mechanism and /dev/random which may not exist in the chrooted
environment...)

Anyway, that's something I'll have to play with one of these days
during my copious amounts of free time :)
