In 1994 I had a stroke, which affected, among other things, my abilities
to use language and math.
I went from being a math prodigy to having a very limited ability to
work with number (and words) in a flash.
Much of the lost abilities returned over time, first, as my brain
recovered from the stroke physically, and then, slower, as I
relentlessly forced myself to study, study, study.
I still use a calculator and spell-checker to do things that I
previously did in my head, effortlessly, but I am able to hold my own as
a programmers/admin.
A lot of the newbies coming into the field, make me looks better than I
actually am, simply by virtue of the newbie's general level of
incompetence. :)
