behind software freedom is to have all software working under the same free
and open software licenses. To have one distribution going against that and
ignoring licenses altogether is counter-productive and then to have Mint
users spouting that licenses don't matter to them just shows that they do
not care about free and open software and the ethic behind it. If they get
their wish then they will drive Linux underground. We are already under
attack and seen as communists for advocating free software by Steve Ballmer
and the like.
It is up to Mint users to hold Mint accountable. If they want to see their
distribution grow and be part of a thriving FOSS community then they need
to start caring about the things that separate us from other operating
systems. As long as the anything goes philosophy reigns then we will be just
seen as vexatious rabble and never be taken seriously by the rest of the
world. This is why I don't take Mint seriously.
I feel rather strongly about licensing and think that most Linux users do
not understand what is at stake when they write some of the things they do.
Mint may grow at the expense of other distributions that tow the line, but
Linux as a whole won't grow until we reach broad acceptance among OEMs and
we cannot do that unless we are act responsibly.
