Then maybe you should look for an already built, open-source utility
to do what you want?

So may I assume you always dump your photos to the same directory?

Lost me at the word "it". I am not sure what "it" refers to. Most
likely would be "new photographs"="it" but that is not clear
especially when I get to "all the while ignoring the new photos."

Let me try and summarize what I think you are asking. You want a
script that does the following:
1. Finds new photos you have dumped to a common place.
2. Copies these to an SD card
3. Move these new photos from any sub-directories created by the
camera/photo software to one single directory.
4. Remove the directories that were created by the original camera/
photo software.
I can't imagine why you would want all of your digital photos in
one big directory as that would be a mess to manage. Again, I would
like to suggest looking for free or open-source software that might
do what you want in a couple of steps plus allow you to organize
your photographs.
