Dunno 'bout your situation Roy but I have had many connection problems recently as well, though I always connect upon a refresh. Maybe it's the solar flares screwing with the 'net.
Incidentally I was able to visit the Guardian just fine...maybe I'm more liberal than you, eh? lol
