Re: [LINUX_Newbies] People say PCLinuxOS is more windows like in feel and look but not Ubuntu

PCLinuxOS uses KDE as its desktop environment and Ubuntu uses GNOME.

KDE is like Windows because it has the panel at the bottom by default. Aside
from that it isn't much like Windows at all. It uses a slab menu by default
but it isn't like the one in Windows. It is highly configurable and not
locked down like Windows. KDE has a Control Panel like Windows but it allows
you to change just about everything, unlike Windows. KDE has its own window
manager, Kwin, and it has built in compositing.

GNOME has its panel at the top and its menu is unlike Windows, but like
Windows it is more locked down and not very configurable. GNOME has its own
window manager, Metacity, and it does not have compositing. Like Windows you
have to add applications to add features.

The differences between PCLOS and Ubuntu do not stop there. PCLOS is RPM
based and Ubuntu is Debian based. PCLOS does not have a 64-bit version and
Ubuntu does (one is apparently in the works for PCLOS). PCLOS has far fewer
applications and it has a smaller community. Ubuntu has a company,
Canonical, behind it and PCLOS is the product of one developer, Texstar.
PCLOS is a fork of Mandriva and Ubuntu is a fork of Debian. PCLOS is
developed slowly, often years in between releases, and Ubuntu follows a
fixed 6 month release cycle. Ubuntu has a server version and long term
support releases and PCLOS does not. Ubuntu has PPAs and PCLOS does not.

Ubuntu is trying to make itself distinct from other GNOME distributions. It
has the buttons on the left like the Mac and it is moving to a more Mac-like
desktop environment with the next release. so after that you can ignore much
of what I said about it. If you want to start with Ubuntu and want to stay
with the current interface for a bit longer, then consider Linux Mint which
is an Ubuntu derivative that uses a modified GNOME desktop with the panel on
the bottom. It is easy to use and setup and has Ubuntu as its base. Win win.

Both PCLOS and Ubuntu are excellent distributions. You can't go wrong either
way.

I disagree that Ubuntu is harder to use. Most people find that it is easy to
use. Ubuntu has much better community support because it is so common and it
has the most users. The advantage of PCLOS is that it works well out of the
box and if you have modest needs it will give you little trouble. Ubuntu
does not require you to upgrade version, but if you do there are often
difficulties that come with any upgrade. LTS releases mitigate this a bit
meaning that you can install and not upgrade for three years.

I am hoping that you are not looking at Linux and expecting it to be like
Windows. I hope that new users expect a new OS to be different and embrace
it for what it is and not look at how it is different. If you make
comparisons then you make the transition difficult for yourself and you will
always be looking at it as a glass half empty. When you come to Linux you
come to something unknown in Windows, freedom and choice. We are proud of
these things which makes every distribution different and unique. It is this
that makes it hard to compare distributions. There is something to like
about all.
