Sometimes, I think the developers of Vinux Linux 3.x, off of Ubuntu could tweak what they have to other possibilities like yours. If they can assist the blind and people like that famed scientist to speak...why not take spoken language to the screen, etc.?

Perhaps the same reason there aren't many word games or pinball games for Linux...In my opinion, it's part language barrier and the profit or fun margin for developers.
Those Asian Robots they make understand speech...maybe the programs will trickle from there?

About what I expected. A program like that is sort of counter to the typical UNIX alike philosophy of lots of little programs. It'd be a huge program! Large programs are a low percentage of the Linux platform.
Neat trick: (the tab completion trick) Hit tab twice at an empty prompt in a terminal to see just how many executables are on your path at any given time.

Display all 2897 possibilities? (y or n)
Root has a few more:

Display all 3266 possibilities? (y or n)
Most of those are teeny tiny little programs.
I still like to browse Freshmeat now and again just to see what is out there because not everything is always in distribution repositories.

Although installing unpackaged software can often be cumbersome, sometimes it is worthwhile.
