Well, Windows has documentation. LDAP has it but most of it's terrible.
Active Directory does more than directory services, providing DNS and
DHCP in a fairly simple package. There is nothing I know that is really
equivalent to GPO either.

There are various attempts at making LDAP servers, but I really haven't
found one that does it as well as Active Directory, especially when time
is factored in as cost. To set up something on a Windows server, you
click help, type in a few keywords, then usually get something, with
clear examples.

Oh, and of course, with LDAP, you'll post something to be told you need
the latest version, which isn't offered as a package by your server,
but, if you install it from source, you've invalidated support, and so
on.
