You have now answered what I meant by setup. Your Windows is on sda1 and
Ubuntu is on sda2 and you have one drive with grub written to the MBR of
sda.Check the grub.cfg file at /boot/grub and look at the Windows section.
You can copy it and paste it here if you wish.

Depending on the version of Windows it will be different. My Windows 7 for
example is on two partitions but XP is on one and more straightforward. If
the Windows section is missing then you will have to re-install grub and
update it. If it has an error it is possible to edit the entry. If Windows
is damaged then you may have to re-install it or fix the error first. A
common problem is for ntdlr to be missing and fixing grub will not help
that. You will need to fix it first. If you have your Windows disk then you
can usually restore the Windows bootloader which would keep you out of
Ubuntu, but then use the Ubuntu disk to replace it with grub and get back
into Ubuntu. This may seem to be a long way about it, but it will give you
the assurance that Windows is still working and then you can go ahead with
getting both to load from grub.

You can usually slow down the boot process and get text mode booting for
Linux, but I don't think that you can do this for Windows. Like many Linux
users, I have Windows but don't use it.
