In ny not too humble opinion the two more practical Linux distro at
present are:
Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support)
and
Xbuntu 11.10.
Your choice of distro will depend on your hardware but the above will
work on computers built in the last five years.
The LTS Ubuntu does not have the eye candy of the Xbuntu, but I've found
both easily configurable on my two boxes; one four years old, the other
less than a month.
There are some gotchas with both but these are not fatal. Both work in
'live' node, meaning you can try them first without installing either OS
on your hardware,
I suggest you try either in this mode (on the computer you'll will
eventually install it on) and get back to us with what ever questions
you have.
Good luck
