Some distributions are more difficult to customize than others I've found. With Linux growing more static than it used to be I'm not seeing the advantages to sophisticated package management as much as I used to. All of the dependency hassles sure are still there though.
Recently I found out that in order to run Gnome on Debian I had to run Apache too. Something to do with the help application I think? Anyhow I thought it was outrageous that I had to run such a service in order to use a windowing environment. Then when I ditched Gnome, and Apache I found out their alternative Wi-Fi configuration tool, wicd didn't work for me.
After monkeying around with that for a bit without any success that laptop has just sat. It isn't very portable with an Ethernet cable plugged into it.
