The only time I recall a Linux Distro asking for the CD, was OpenSuse and I was able to point it to the Web server for the needed files.
As to whether you need to build a new box for Linux, this is entirely up to you. I'm typing this on a old Intel dual P3 slot1 with both running at 650 MHz. The old Intel server board has one bad IDE port, I could be using a SCSI hard drive, but I opted for a SATA controller and hard drive instead. Also when the DVD-Multi-Writer went bad I added another one.
I tried for a dual-AMD Opteron server board, so I could test 64-bit Linux, but the on-board video or the three VGA cards I've tried gave partial screen distortions. When I get a chance I'll try the dual-Intel 604 boards I've picked up cheap.
Good luck,
Joan in Reno
