The latest GNOME is supposed to have made some speed improvements. You could try Ubuntu GNOME. You do not need to re-install, just add it to your existing Lubuntu.
I am not sure what is going on with Unity in 14.04. I find it much slower than in the past and slower than KDE by quite a bit. I am curious about whether others find it slow as well.
The biggest problem with Bodhi is the they had to make some compromises to keep it minimalist. There isn't a live version and the installer is basic. They use apt-get, but you have to install Synaptic if you want graphical package management. E17 is beautiful, but it takes some adjustment to get used to it.
I have never installed Puppy. I have just used it as a rescue disk.
