OK not all video devices do EDID.

In that case you have to do some arcane black magic called generating Modelines. A topic interesting enough one could almost make a pastime of it.

Some of the external links of that article are worth exploring as well. Actually reading every scrap of information you can possibly get your hands on about the topic wouldn't hurt!

Back in the bad old days XF86Config files were jealously guarded treasures! And a large part of the reason was modeline entries.
