THere is also the shred command. It really depends how sensitive the
information is. As Ken said, if it's really sensitive, then use a heavy
hammer, saw, disassemble the platters and so on.

You can use the dd command to write 0's to the disk. There's all sorts of
ways. If you google something like destroy disk data software you
should get results.
