Super grub will boot it for you and repair the boot sector. Super grub 2 will boot it for you and you can repair it your self. You will have to look hard to find Super Grub it is much better than Super Grub 2. They are both free and you should not be without them. Are you certain the Hard Disk is good? I would recover as much data as possible before doing anything else. Is not your proposal [sudo grub-install /dev/XXX] used to install programs after a valid boot?
How can I recover? Regards Is HD sda1
