Ah, that answers that question--thank you Loyal.
For what it's worth, I assume you could install LXDE on a Mint install and
choose it as your default, but that's untested by me, though I do have a
Mint 17.2 install where I use openbox and dwm.

XFCE for Mint comes out about 2-4 weeks later than Mate and Cinnamon.  Cinnamon is a resource hog.
On my old netbook, I run XFCE.  As far as I know, there is not blessed LXDE version of Mint though I wish
there were.  For example, the XFCE version of Mint 17.2 just came out.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] linx mint slow

Defragging is unnecessary in Linux, Mint or otherwise. The file system takes care of that. It stores data differently from Windows, allowing space for files to grow and then over time silently moving things in the background.

In my experience, the two biggest reasons for Linux slowing down running low on space in your root file system and having too large a swap file or none at all. If the root file system gets too small then it cannot cache files, especially media files or burning disks. The only time I have really messed up a Linux installation was when I ran out of space on my root partition. Things have got better since then and you can more easily fix things up from the recovery mode in grub.  You will not have the same problem if you run out of space in a home partition. Once you delete a few files then you can be running back to normal speed.

There are utilities to help clean up your root file system. They will remove duplicate files, unused files, orphans, and clean out caches.

I don't know specifically what problem you have but I would look at your file system and see what size of swap file you have and how much free space you have in your root partition. Your swap file should be roughly equal to your RAM. In the old days it used to be double, but RAM is usually much larger than most people need in a modern computer.

My computer runs slowly, but it is a hardware issue. It runs slowly in both Linux and Windows. The difference is that I leave Linux on for weeks at a time. Re-booting periodically will improve things. Time for a new computer soon for me.

Memory is always good. With Mint some of the desktops can be resources
hogs too.

Probably not an issue--not impossible but unlikely.

Yeah, most Linux systems are as bad, or worse, than Windows with this.

Probably not an issue.

As Justin says, usually not an issue till space is low.

You young 'uns learn differently. When I see someone has made a youtube
video, I get annoyed and go to the next result--why make me sit through 5
minutes of what I could read in 1.

If browsing is slow, it may be useful to disable ipv6 if it's enabled.

Deleting the cookies may not make that big a difference--adblock is useful,
and it's unfortunate--many sites do rely on ads to support them, but there
are so many put in that are the equivalent of spam, that suck up bandwidth
for those with bandwidth limits, that blare out sound and pictures, that
serve malware, that it's become a necessity.

I think that trying the XFCE version (which, as far as I can tell, is
usually quicker to come out than LXDE versions--someone who knows might be
able to give better answers) would probably fix a lot of the slowness.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] linx mint slow

There are a variety of reasons that computers run slow. Here is a list of some of the common ones:
  1. Insufficient computer memory (you are forever writing to and retrieving temp data from hard drive).
  2. viruses and malware including 3rd party cookies
  3. excessive start up programs that are really not needed (they slow down the computer start-up and use memory and processor time)
  4. The hard drive needs to be defragged (it is looking everywhere to retrieve a single file)
  5. The trash has not been emptied (This is usually not a problem till you are low on hard drive space)

In general, a good way to learn to deal with these problems is to:
  1. to use Google to look up the problems
  2. or see a step-by-step demo on YouTube. They often walk you through it while showing you how the screen looks in the process.

If you are using a recent version Firefox, you may be able to speed up internet operations by using the options.
Click on the 3 horizontal lines on the upper right side of the browser screen
Click on options. Notice you have choices like General search Content Privacy Security
Select the options one by one try some limited changes like;
in Privacy, accept 3rd party cookies NEVER ---- and Clear History when Firefox closes
in Security try the following (if not already set) Warn me when sites try to install add ons--- and block reported attack sites.

Some other suggestions are to install add-on ins Firefox options like
  1. Ghostery – it gets rid of corporate spying on you
  2. Adblock – adds slow you down and are annoying.

I hope this helps you get started. Keep in mind getting rid of 3rd party cookies and erasing history has some costs. You will have to write down passwords somewhere and re-enter them.

Some people may use Bleachbit, I never have, you can find it installed under System Tools on some Distros, or get it with Synaptic, etc. To me auto-defrag is sort of what journalizing is, but not quite, I suppose. For Firefox, I also had to remove some stuff from its Downloads after I made sure they were saved. Don't forget to empty the trash either.

I also use those tools on the Windows computers that I use or set-up for others.

Thanks Joan.  I was eves dropping on this conversation.

You made several good points to speed things up, like using the Firefox settings to get rid of unwanted cookies.  Also I was not aware of any auto defragging in Linux.

However, I would like to pursue these  point a bit further.  I am hoping to locate useful utilities in Linux like those common in Windows.  In windows there are  several very useful utilities that do a remarkable cleanup job (and therefore speed up).  I mention utilities  like:

Ccleaner          cleans up temp internet files, histories, cookies, etc
Glary utilities    fixes old shortcuts, cleans up internet tracks, temp files, etc

Can you ( or anyone else) name the equivalent utilities.

Justin

You may find another Distro faster, too.
