Thanks Joan. I was eves dropping on this conversation.
You made several good points to speed things up, like using the Firefox settings to get rid of unwanted cookies. Also I was not aware of any auto defragging in Linux.
However, I would like to pursue these point a bit further. I am hoping to locate useful utilities in Linux like those common in Windows. In windows there are several very useful utilities that do a remarkable cleanup job (and therefore speed up). I mention utilities like:
Ccleaner cleans up temp internet files, histories, cookies, etc
Glary utilities fixes old shortcuts, cleans up internet tracks, temp files, etc
Can you ( or anyone else) name the equivalent utilities.
Justin

Do you use Firefox or Chrome as your web browser? In Firefox, Edit, Preferences, Privacy, Remove individual cookies, or choose the other one if you don't mind typing in your passwords again. For Chrome, the three lines for settings, then advanced...it's been awhile since I used it.
You may find another Distro faster, too.

If your file system is a Linux file system most likely it auto-defrags at night when it's left on. Do you have at least a gigabyte or more of RAM? Do delete any cookies that might be ad-based and so calling home? There's probably more, but I can't recall right now. Do you use Mate, XFCE, or LXDE-core as your Gui?
