Sounds like an issue with their upgrade thing. You could try apt-get
update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade, which is how it used to be
done with Debian. However, not working with Ubuntu or XUbuntu, I don't
know if that would work or not.
A couple of minutes of googling finds this, which might be relevant, but
not using Ubuntu much, I really don't know. (It's for an older version, but
it seems as if, when you're on a Long Term Support version such as 14.04.
it might be trickier. Note that an upgrade always has a risk of breakage.
