I mean like how to down load and install programs. I live in rural Tennessee, so I don't have access to classes. I am trying to read books on the subject, but it just confuses me. I am using a mint 16.01? Give me a direction to start! Thank you!
You say you don't have access to classes, but do you at least have
access to high speed internet (for whatever definition of High Speed
applies to rural TN)?
A quick google for this: "linux mint tutorial for beginners" results
in several mint specific video tutorials that seem promising. Some
are shell oriented but some seem more pure Newbie. Note, I didn't
watch any of them, just that the blurbs about each I read showed
promise.
Also, you may see a LOT of different looking Linux distros, keep in
mind that there are three main ones:
Red Hat
Debian (and Ubuntu, specifically)
SuSE
Underneath they are ALL the same, with perhaps minor differences, such
as Red Hat and SuSE using the RPM package format while Debian/Ubuntu
and derivatives use the debian package format.
there are some that are utterly unlike any of those three, but most of
the ones you're likely to encounter are descendents or variants of
those three. For the GUI, you will likely see hundreds of different
GUI environments, so YMMV there. But they all do basically the same
thing, just in different ways, each has their pros and cons.
Finally, Mint is a variant of Ubuntu, which is a much more polished
and newbie friendly version of Debian, just to get the Genealogy down.
Cheers,
Jeff
