Yes, but you didn't have something called messages.
But...the answer is--you're using systemd. To view logs, you would
use journalctl -e or something like that. Do that next time it shuts off
and there's a possibility, though as Jeff pointed out, certain hardware
errors wouldn't show up, that this log will give you a clue about why the
computer is having problems.
