Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Rasperry pi

I've been thinking about purchasing a Raspberry Pi because they only cost $35.00 - that's it. Yes, you need a keyboard and mouse to attach to it via USB and you can either attach a monitor or a TV via HDMI.  You also need a phone type charger to plug it in - no battery or real-time clock comes built in. But most people have those type chargers around their house and they are pretty cheap if you need to purchase one. So, power consumption would be extremely low, if a person is trying to save on their electric bill.

Best way to learn something about them is to go to their website  at
https://www.raspberrypi.org/

and also do Google searches. You can also get access to ebooks on Raspberry Pi at
http://it-ebooks.info/search/?q=Raspberry+Pi&type=title

Yes, it is for the hacker type, but nevertheless it can be used as an inexpensive desktop type machine if you want and it does provide a means to see Internet directly on your TV.

The rasberry pi has the following advantages:
very small
very light
very inexpensive
very very powerful for a small package.

However, it is bare bones and it not always easy to find help if you run into troubles.  It come complete with almost nothing.   Beginners are likely to stay far from it.

The rasberry pi  is often used by people with a lot technical ability for specialized uses like industrial controllers.    They often used for a variety uses like CNC routers, etc.

Most Laptops, by comparison,  are huge,  expensive and probably power consuming.   However, unless you are working with someone with lots of skill and patience and desire to learn, stay with the laptop.

The rasbverry pi is a tasty treat for techno geeks.
