I haven't done conversion with vlc. I use ffmpeg and convert everything in
to mp4.

Such as

ffmpeg -i myfile.flv newfile.mp4

[LINUX_Newbies] Convert Video Files.

Convert Video Files.
I am using vlc.
Vlc can show every video like wmv or avi or mpg.
But other software on other also old computers cannot show every video file.
Question:
How should I convert a video like flv, so that every also win software
can show the video.

As I've stated, several times, getting the wireless card to work is
secondary.

The problem is that, when a solution fails, Linux will not reboot,
and I have to reinstall Linux. Can anybody point me to a site that gives
instructions on what to do when Linux freezes on bootup? Or, perhaps, a
method of backup and restore where you can do the restore when booting
from a Live Linux CD?

you could use a loop to generate the starnn.dat files

There is a 'download snapshot' option that downloads the whole lot as a
'ZIP' which you could unzip, probably the easiest option

Thanks all who replied; solution follows:

Fitted P4 2.6MHz 400FSB 512cache replacing the 1.6MHz CPU and it booted and
runs good.. New CPU Intel designation: SL6PP.. The first try; 2.8MHz would
not boot on my machine but, according to blogs, did on others.. Computers,
eh?? :^).

[LINUX_Newbies] fixed mouse

good morning
this happened sometimes
every 3 months one time only
but I want to learn Linux.

I click
10 windows open
and then the mouse is connected to a small window like Chromium
whatever I do
the window is connected to the mouse.
I can do nothing.
Moving the mouse
the window is following.
left click
nothing
right click
nothing
esc nothing

I do shutdown.

Is there a way I can disconnect mouse and this window?

A lot of Linux Live CD/DVDs have an option to rescue it's install. If memory serves Mint has this, but you may have to hit the ESCape key to see it.

Since it's Ubuntu-based a Puppy Linux Live CD might also help when Linux shuts down unclean. Puppy rescued me after a System Update failed during a power outage.

    I do thank you. I want to reiterate, though, that my problem is not finding a solution; as you point out, there are LOTS of solutions out there. My problem is that when a solution doesn't work (or at least the first three I tried), Linux freezes on boot-up (meaning that half an hour later, it's still frozen), and, because I don't know how to undo this, I have to reinstall Linux. I have little doubt I'm going to find something that works; what I am looking for is so clue as to how to get Linux to boot the rest of the way when something doesn't work.

I never tried Cinnamon I don't think.Anyhow I have done Wi-Fi in Linux and it can be a bit of a pain, even when the hardware is supported. Broadcom has a bit of a reputation of being especially hard to get to work, I've never had the pleasure of that experience either. But I've certainly seen enough people asking for help to get Broadcom to work in order to realize there must be a serious issue there.

A quick search for the phrase Linux Broadcom returns 3.4 some odd million hits. This is a page with drivers

You are going to have to determine whether you have a 32, or 64 bit version of Mint installed. Maybe you just know? If not see if your Mint 16 has the lsb_release command. If that does not work then perhaps you can tell with this command, uname -a. If you see the letters pae then you have 32 bits, if not maybe 64. Although you can run 32 bits without pae too. If you see x86_64 or something then you have 64 bits, i686 is 32. uname -m might work so it is worth trying.


Once you have figured out if you have 32, or 64 bit download the right driver and see if you can install it. I am reading the README.txt they have and you're going to have to build it against a kernel source tree it looks like. That can be a difficult task for new users. Follow the Ubuntu directions to set that up, and cross your fingers.

Truthfully, that is what I have been doing. The problem is that I want to be able to show it to others as an example of how Linux can bring new life to old computers, and (the reason I'm using Linux Mint/Cinammon) that the interface is far easier to use for those used to Windows XP than Windows 8 is.

When Linux cannot establish a network connection on boot it will wait for a period of time before continuing the boot process. That is just how it is. Be patient. You might be better off turning Mint's splash screen off so you can see the start up messages. Although how you go about doing that I've no idea.

The real solution to your problem is to plug an Ethernet cable into your computer and forget about that Broadcom hardware. But I'm sure you don't want to hear that. So forget I said it. With all the problems people seem to have with wireless in Linux I think they should dump all support for the nonsense.
