Reinstall from a different disc image if possible is your best (and
quickest) bet. I always just wipe and install rather than use the
upgrade options, too many people have problems with them.
Then I ran this script to fix all the problems / install all the media
codec files and what not. Worth looking through it as it installs
google chrome, comment out anything you don't want. (ubuntu 14.04 only)
