Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Media streaming distro

I considered switching to Mint, partly because of this issue, but mostly because of problems with Ubuntu 15.04. After half a year (I installed before release) I cannot get GNOME or Unity to work at all on one of my computers. In addition it will not re-boot with systemd. I have to use upstart via the Advanced grub option. This computer has run every version of Ubuntu and its variants plus most other distros successfully without fail for the past five years. Add to that, I am not happy with Plasma 5 which is great, but not ready for prime time. If I had not bought a new computer I would have installed Mint by now, as much as I detest Cinnamon and Mate.

Right now I am using Xubuntu on the aforesaid computer and using it as a streaming box, attached via HDMI to my TV. It now does most of what I want. I have Kubuntu on my laptop and Windows 10 on my new PC. I still have not decided what flavour of Linux to put on that computer.

Thank you. I love Linux, and use it much more than Mac or PC.
But,with several computers. I have VLC working beautifully,or not at all.
Sigh.  Oh well. I have much more success than failure with my Mint. That
I have so spotty success with VLC voes not deter me.
                                       I`m hooked.

Thanks. I tried the solutions previously.

I have re-tried with some success. I can get sound to work in GNOME applications, but not KDE/ Plasma 5 which somewhat satisfies me. I can use Rhythmbox for music for example, but not Amarok or Clementine. Chrome works now, as does VLC.

The problem for users is that there are no global controls. You can change the settings in the Mixer, but then still get no sound until you open VLC or Chrome or another application and change its internal controls. This is not good for most people who might give up after not getting it to work globally. Also changing settings does not work across all desktops which is strange since they all use Pulse Audio.

Anyway, thanks for encouraging me to stick with it.

This can sometimes be easy and sometimes be a nuisance.

I have a brief section on HDMI and sound. I didn't test in KDE, but it
worked for me with a few different systems

HDMI works perfectly with Windows. Most of my media is stored on Linux so I would prefer to keep the Linux partition as my primary OS. However as a media streaming device it fails.

Probably will stick with LTS or rolling release since I want low maintenance. I have some proprietary drivers that will not work with Debian and do not want to go through hassles with enabling them (my Ethernet card would not work last time I used Debian and I could not get the drivers without the card. Catch 22. I am distro neutral and have used most major distros of all persuasions.
