It depends on the desktop environment exactly how you do it. You basically
have to turn on the microphone which is probably either turned off by
default or muted. You have to go to the mixer by right clicking on the icon
for the sound in the system tray or similar then you have to go to the
settings and choose Microphone and either check the box to use it if it is
unchecked or slide the slider up. I don't think that you have to change
ALSA. Each desktop environment uses a different front end or backend or
both, so it is hard to be more definite without knowing more about your
setup.
