There is a way, You will need to work out which partitions your installs
use (this is easy)
Boot from a live disk
Delete / format the partion with ubuntu on
now you add a line to 'fstab' in /etc to mount the spare partition
somewhere useful (e.g. /home/sophie/40gb)

Does this organize the boot system?
Does thig belong to grub?
Should I add the line
fstab in the Xubuntu.
How can Xubuntu reach the free space
which I did delete/format?
