Had a lovely reply almost done then my pc at work crashed (Win10)...
32 bit versions are available in both server & desktop, find them here: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04.2/
Maybe download the desktop version to test? It can be run without actually installing.
Always, ALWAYS, use the latest release, simply for security reasons. After the initial install, this is the biggest part of running a publicly accessible server - it needs to be kept up to date with all the latest patches & fixes to keep out the unwanted.
Given the age of the system you were planning on using, I think updating to something a little newer would be better. The good news is it doesn't need to be over the top - a decent cpu (2GHz dual core or better), a decent hard drive (preferably at least two for backup, size will depend on how much you will be uploading) and a decent amount of RAM ( I'd go 4GB minimum but 8-16GB would be better. If running as a dedicated server then video isn't an issue. As it seems it will have minimum access this should be more than enough. It just needs to be reliable.
Cheers,
Mark
