There is a third form of protection... the self-educating user.

Users who install Open Source software from places like Sourceforge, or
the project's Home Page repository, and verify its integrity with MD5
stand a better chance of keeping their computer clean than people who
download stuff from places like CNet and other cruft-holes.

Users who demonstrate a high degree of skepticism are less likely to
click on infected links in unsolicited emails they receive from unknown
parties... or from 'their bank', requiring them to take 'urgent'
action... or to fall for other various social engineering hustles.
