It sounds like a graphics problem. Maybe a package upgrade will fix it. You
will need to boot into recovery mode to do that. Go to the Advanced section
of GRUB just under where it says Ubuntu. See the pictures here:

You might want to try the failsafe graphics mode first. Once you are in
then you can fix the packages using apt-get or the
package manager. Failing that then you can drop into a root shell prompt
and try:

sudo apt-get update

then

sudo apt-get upgrade. Try re-booting and see if it works. If not you can
try again with some of the suggestions in the link above. It would help to
know what your graphics card is. All is not lost. You can probably get it
working if you have the patience. If not just re-install. At that point you
can choose another distribution or stick with Ubuntu. Things can go awry
with any installation.
