[LINUX_Newbies] Re: Question about a couple computers....1 old, 1 not so old

 

First, the laptop--

Use the latest version of the distribution you select--don't try for
an old one thinking that compatibility would be better. Often,
compatibility issues actually improve over time (but not always,
unfortunately). Start with the most recent distro, though.

That said, I think you would be best off with Puppy also. (Not Damn
Small Linux, as someone mentioned, since it has not been updated in
some time and seems not to be under active development). Here, the
latest one is Ubuntu based, so you can use the Puppy repositories or
the Ubuntu ones. The standard install has a surprisingly complete
feature set in a very small footprint--very important with such a
small drive.

As for the desktop--whether it will use 64 bit version depends on the
processor. Most of that vintage and with that frequency are 64-bit
capable, but you might have to find out for sure--but if I were you,
I'd just try it and see.
