[nslu2-linux] Re: CUPS segfault on TomatoUSB RT-N16 router

@ Eno and the other Optware folks :

is there a reason that dbus has PIE enabled at configuration time?

Some threads at DD-WRT suggest that with PIE disabled during compile time, it allows both CUPS and avahi to work normally. Also, it looks like newer versions of dbus make PIE disabled the default, (rather than enabled by default) - IIUC.

Could this dbus-issue be the fix for CUPS users on DD-WRT and TomatoUSB?

I was able to reflash it, but ran into a snag with the Linux utility in that my on-board eth0 is not functional and I needed to manually identify the network device. Otherwise, no problems.

The current version of UNSLUNG is now installed and pyTivo is up and running. I also purchased a second NSLU2 on eBay just to experiment with.

[nslu2-linux] CUPS segfault on TomatoUSB RT-N16 router

Hi all, I'm passing along a segfault report to you for CUPS, running on a TomatoUSB RT-N16 ...

here is the link to the report : http://tomatousb.org/forum/t-336545/extra-newer-optware-ipk-s-not-in-the-ddwrt-ipkg-feed#post-1335351

but some of the details are (as posted by user Brettman) :

============================
Output when installing CUPS:

root@unknown:/tmp/home/root# ipkg install cups
Installing cups (1.4.6-1) to /opt/...
Downloading <link removed>/cups_1.4.6-1_mipsel.ipk
Configuring cups
Successfully terminated.
Output when starting CUPS:

root@unknown:/tmp/home/root# /opt/sbin/cupsd
Segmentation fault
Not very helpful, is it?

Output when starting CUPS with strace:

root@unknown:/tmp/home/root# strace /opt/sbin/cupsd
execve("/opt/sbin/cupsd", ["/opt/sbin/cupsd"], [/* 8 vars */]) = 0
old_mmap(NULL, 20, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0) = 0x2aaae000
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV +++
Segmentation fault
The last entry in the messages log only shows my successful ssh connection and /opt/var/log/cups/ is empty.

I did ipkg update and upgrade before uninstalling and reinstalling CUPS.

My router is an Asus RT-N16.

I hope this helps. There is also another thread on here from others having the same problem as me at this thread: <link removed>/forum/t-292115. I'm not sure if anyone actually has the ipkg CUPS working on their router.

Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Build from "scratch", LOL FDD

Paul, Why would you go to Newegg.com for any thing. They never have what
you want. Most floppys
now are of the USB type. But the BIOS would read it as an 'A' drive in
Windows and as FD0 in Linux.

SIgh... there somes a point when it's no longer worth pursuing... This
has never been about whether or not the BIOS or OS can see a floppy.
This was about your false statement that modern computers control
legacy floppies through a "HDD or CD controller" when they do not.
I've asked you for technical information demonstrating this new/old
hybrid chipset that controlls two different disk standards, and you
have yet to produce anything beyond the same arguement.

"BIOS recognizes 'A' drive" is insufficient. If you can't answer the

We have found 0 items that match "floppy controller" within:

Seems like there are some external USB things now that may or may not read a floppy disk.

lowercase "ps" right? or are you using something else?

ps -Af will list all processes running and display user names including
numeric along with other info

ps -Af | sort will print the list in numeric and alphabetic order
by (hopefully) username.

Please point me to any source of information that can provide data on
your Floppy Controllers? The Floppy controller is a discrete device
from the hard disk controller, with the exceptions of IDE and SCSI
Floppies. USB Floppies use SCSI command sets over the USB bus. Hard
disks and optical drives do not pass data across a Floppy Controller.
They are controlled via an IDE chipset, a SATA Chipset, a SCSI chipset
or SAS chipset, but not a Floppy controller chip. Unless, of course,
you're using a computer built in the 80's before IDE became a
standard.

Ummm... what?

Floppy controllers (FDD stands for Floppy Disk Drive and FDC stands
for Floppy Disk Controller) most certainly do NOT control Hard Drives
and CD-ROM drives now, or at any point in the past that I'm aware of.

SATA is the current ATA standard for Hard Drives and CD-ROMs, IDE was
the previous standard and is still in use to a degree on current MBs.

SAS is the current SCSI standard, though a LOT of older SCSI
controllers are still in use as well... you can't beat a good, cheap
U360 card.

But in any case, the FDD Controller does NOT control any hard drives
or optical drives.

Almost all MBs has what you would call an FDD controller. I think it has
been rename. The FDD controller
also controlls the HD and the CD drive.

It has programs on it for digital and control operations for my Icom 706 MarkII-G transceiver. If any of you are ham operators give me a "shout" at my email address at:

The system I built last year was a bit more modest than the one you are planning on making.

I never did get the onboard audio to work. I ended up tossing in an old SoundBlaster card I had lying around.

I'm happy with how it works.

If your needs are as modest as you say they are then I believe even my i3 HTPC (Home Theater PC) system could handle them. Like Joan said run DOS on a Trash Bin PC. (TBPC) DOS would struggle with new hardware. Let your TBPC read all your old floppies too, then just transfer the data to your new PC, maybe write it all onto a DVD disc. I don't think my system board even has a floppy controller on it. Trying to find a new motherboard with an FDD controller on it would limit your selection dramatically.

The TBPC I'm on now:

Found at the dumps.

Here is another TBPC. I asked the lady running her garage sale what's up with that pile over there? She told me, oh, that is garbage, so I pulled this system out of it:

I never saw someone happier than she looked as I lugged it down her driveway to my car. It'd run DOS. Has a FDD in it too. Both of my TBPCs do.

So save an old clunker from the e-Trash pile. I think you could scale back your mega-machine a bit too.

I went to a CQ fest here once but the hams I met were a bit too strange for me. I'm into electronics, just never much for radio though.
