Geez Scott, I know you're getting to be a bit up in the years, but he
said, right there in the OP that he's got an nVidia GeForce GTX 550 Ti
;-)

More importantly, it may help if you try passing the paramter acpi=off
and see if disabling the various bits of ACPI helps... that's a pretty
common issue on some chipsets... and that will at least get you a
place to start. In general, Linux just works on many/most systems,
but there are plenty that have their issues. Unfortunately, I can't
really tell you how to do that because it can vary from live distro to
live distro.

Also, you could try just hitting the Escape key when the Live CD
starts booting the kernel. A lot of the distros today use a graphical
boot sequence and hide startup messages. In many cases hitting
escape will force the system to display the boot messages and if it's
hanging, you could see where, or at least see the error message that
is being thrown.
