Re: [LINUX_Newbies] Re: Debian Squeeze and Software Center

For someone who is used to Windows, the CLI itself is daunting. I grew up
with it and am comfortable, but many people have never used one or had
occasion to. It just takes a few syntax or typing errors and they get
frustrated. Also if you do not use it often enough then you are forever
looking up commands, etc. It is not a question of power, but utility. Users
must use the best tool for them. I have a friend who buys top quality hand
tools and uses them almost exclusively. Other people like power tools. Both
can produce a good result, if one has the ability to use them effectively.

The problem is when the GUI application fails then you must face your fears
to fix apt or dpkg. That is not time to learn the commandline. Frustration
can only make the situation more tense. I think that users should ease
themselves into the commandline and feel comfortable with the terminal and
using some basic commands, then when the have to resort to it they will not
feel pressure. Most of the time they can Google and copy and paste to
start. Encouragement and guidance is helpful, but we need to know that what
we are advising and is easy for us is hard for the one we are advising and
be sensitive to that.
